I Still Want To Hold Your Hand

Arthur Jacobs told his bedridden wife he has loved her for 80 years and has missed her so badly. Lovingly, he ponders she was only 20 and still in school when they fell in love and got married. The beloved wife just held and kissed Arthur’s hand, and could only respond with ‘Hello, Hello’ and some chuckle.

The grandson could only mutter, “there is so much love in this family.” Overwhelmed, he was witnessing a real example of life lesson about stubborn, everlasting love shown by his grandparents. He is seeing a quality of love that transcends decades of good and bad times, in sickness and in health, and he could emulate that. The whole point of the scene is that everlasting love for humans is possible in this era of divorce.

Nowadays, warring couples could think of thousands of reasons why they have decided to end the marriage. Some circumstances could be deep and serious, others too shallow and plain immaturity. Dissolving the union that is legally signed by state and church because they couldn’t stand each other’s presence anymore due to irreconcilable differences and misunderstandings would lead us to ask, ‘Where has love gone?’ The marriage happened because of love, right? Love will cover a multitude of flaws and shortcomings, right?

Maybe, it’s the changing of time and values. Or, new definitions of marriage and love have come up. Or seriously, maybe, it’s the fading reverence for God and His commands that had led many to separate and dissolve the marriage. After all, He’s the One who started it all. Just maybe.

Nevertheless, God’s teaching about love and marriage still stands regardless of the changes happening in our midst. It’s not going to be obsolete.

Hebrews 13:4 says, “Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled; but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”
