Teacher Fired for Refusing to Give Students a Failing Grade of 50% – A Controversial Issue

Mrs. Diane Tirado, a teacher at West Gate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie, Florida, was fired for giving her students a grade of zero. She said that she had to do that because some of her students were not able to submit their homework. She said that she has given them fourteen days to finish it, but some did not comply. They left her no choice but to give them a failing grade of zero.

The school follows a ‘no zero’ policy. She was fired by the school management for not following the school guideline of giving the lowest grade of at least 50% even without doing their homework or simply doing nothing, which Mrs. Tirado strongly opposed.

“I’m so upset because we have a nation of kids that are expecting to get paid and live their life just for showing up and it’s not real,” she explained.

She added that this whole thing is ridiculous. But before leaving her room, she wrote a short message on the board for her students.

It writes:

Bye Kids,

Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best things in life! I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50% for not handing anything in.

Mrs. Tirado

Many who have read her controversial story on her Facebook post were saddened by what happened but totally agreed with what she did in taking a stand for what is right. She hopes that this kind of policy should be changed. Watch the video to find out the whole story.
