Morgan Freeman has converted his 124-acre ranch into a sanctuary for bees in a bid to curb the insects’ dwindling population.
The 81-year-old actor is doing his part to save the bees given the instrumental role the pollinators play in our ecosystem.
According to Forbes, The Shawshank Redemption star brought in 26 bee hives from Arkansas to his ranch in Mississippi, where the veteran actor not only provides the bees with food, which is essentially a mixture of sugar and water.
Each bee hive can house between 10,000 and 60,000 bees, so it’s safe to say that Freeman’s bee sanctuary will help boost their numbers. Moreover, the actor has also planted bee-friendly flora like clover, magnolia, and lavender trees to create a safe habitat for the insects.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the actor’s foray into beekeeping. During a 2014 appearance as a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Freeman told Fallon that two weeks before the filming of the episode, he had taken up beekeeping as hobby.
He also talked about the need to save the flying insects and how important they are to our environment.
“There is a concentrated effort for bringing bees back onto the planet…We do not realize that they are the foundation, I think, of the growth of the planet, the vegetation…,” Freeman said during the interview.
He added that he does not wear a bee suit and has not yet been stung by the little buzzers probably because he only feeds them and does not intend to harvest honey or disturb the beehives.
Freeman joins a long list of A-listers who have ventured into beekeeping, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Scarlett Johansson, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, and Martha Stewart.
