Kirk Cameron Comes Under Fire Over Anti-Gay Comments

Kirk Cameron, known for his role as Mike Seaver on the 80s ABC sitcom Growing Pains, has sparked controversy with comments he made during an appearance on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight.

During a discussion on social issues, the 41-year-old actor did not hold back as he voiced his opinion on homosexuality.

“I think that it’s…it’s…it’s unnatural,” the Christian activist told Morgan. “I think that it’s…it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”

When asked what he would do if one of his six children came up to him and told him he/she was gay, Cameron replied, “I wouldn’t say ‘That’s great, son, as long as you’re happy.’ There are all sorts of issues we need to wrestle through in our life… Just because you feel one way doesn’t mean we should act on everything we feel.”

Shortly after the interview was aired, Cameron received flak from LGBTQ rights group GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), calling Cameron as outdated as his 1980s TV character.

“Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation,” Herndon Graddick, the Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

Cameron also faced criticism from several Hollywood stars, including his Growing Pains co-star Tracey Gold, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Roseanne Barr, Craig Ferguson, Josh Charles, and Sara Gilbert among others, US Weekly reported.
