“God Blesses Those Who Don’t Forget Him” says Quadriplegic and Cancer Survivor Joni Eareckson

Joni Eareckson is the founder of Joni and friends, a ministry to the disabled, who herself is a quadriplegic. Adding a blow to her wound she was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in 2010. She was diagnosed with cancer again in 2018 after she was declared “cancer-free” in 2015. Joni has now successfully overcome cancer the second time and said that “God blesses those who do not forget Him” in a blog post.

Joni Eareckson was an athlete. When she was 17 years old, she dived into shallow waters when she went swimming in the bay with her sister, which left her quadriplegic for the rest of her life.

Without being able to move her limbs and take care of herself, Joni was in despair and lost hope to live. Since she was unable to kill herself physically, she wanted to kill herself spiritually and emotionally. She told her mom to leave her in a dark room and shut the door.

“Out in the darkness, I cried out to God, ‘if you don’t want me to die, show me the way to live’,” Joni said.

Since God allowed many Christian friends in Joni’s life, she came to know the truth from the Bible. “God allows bad things to happen in my life that I can truly find Christ and God’s glory can be revealed through my life”, said Joni.

To everyone’s horror, Joni was diagnosed with stage III breast cancer in 2010. She went through mastectomy and chemotherapy, which was effective and she was declared cancer-free in 2015.

In 2018, caner returned due to a malignant nodule on her chest wall near her original cancer area. She has completely recovered in November 2018 when the cancer cells were removed by surgery.

Through all the battles in her life, Joni held on to God. “Most of all, I cannot stop thanking Jesus. I keep quoting Deuteronomy 6:10-12 where God poured out one abundant blessing after another on His people…as long as they were careful not to forget the Lord”, writes Joni, in a blog post.
