Being new parents is really exciting and overwhelming. But how would you feel if what was given to you from the hospital nursery was not your baby? That seems to be a serious problem that needs an immediate solution.
Richard and Mercy Cushworth were the proud parents of a new baby boy. They named him Moses, who was born in a hospital in El Salvador, Mercy’s native country. Stressed from giving birth, the couple let their baby stay at the nursery that night. But they noticed something wasn’t right when the nurses gave them the baby the next day. They had some concerns about the physical appearance of the baby because he was a little darker than what they saw when their baby was born.
On an interview with BBC, Mercy said that everything happened so fast when she delivered the baby. She remembered kissing him and was taken to the nursery.
“He was just passed by me and I gave him a kiss and then he was taken to the nursery and that was the last time I saw him.”
The couple, after the nurses assured them that it’s their baby, went home to Texas. But while time passed by, month after month, they noticed that the baby didn’t have any of their features. After a DNA test, they all discovered that it’s not theirs.
“The thought that the baby I had been nursing, taken care of, loving him, bathing him – that he was not mine. And then I had another thought which came with it – where’s my baby? So, I had two thoughts – what’s going to happen with this baby, and where’s my baby.” Mercy stated.
Worried about his real baby’s whereabouts, Richard expressed his fears that he might be the in wrong hands.
“I just accepted [the first boy] as my child. Now I look back at the pictures around the time we came to Dallas when he was three months old and I’m shocked that I never suspected because you can see that it’s just obviously not my child if you look at some of the pictures… I don’t know how I didn’t ask myself. You just don’t think about these things. Who thinks about these things?”
Richard, being from England, worked with the British Ambassador to El Salvador, together with his wife to retrieve their real baby which they were successful of. Everything went fine. Both babies were safely returned to their true parents. And now, the Cushworth family is living a happy life with the true little Moses by their side.
