Nurse Adopts Baby After Heroin-Addicted Parents Leave Her At NICU

God truly works in mysterious ways, just look at the story of this mother and child, who were brought together under unusual circumstances.

Liz Smith was working as a nurse at the Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Brighton, Massachusetts, when baby Giselle was brought in as a patient. She was just three months old, and it was revealed that she was born to parents who were heroin addicts. Because she was premature, she ended up in the hospital’s NICU.

Sadly, due to her parents’ drug problems, Giselle became a ward of the state. As she fought to survive, not a single person visited her at the hospital. This was when she met nurse Smith, who was struggling to conceive a child of her own.

Smith revealed that her insurance would not cover the costs of in-vitro fertilization. She felt devastated because she had been longing for a child. Because of her woes, her co-workers at the hospital introduced her to baby Giselle. She admitted that she was not completely open to the idea of adoption at first.

“Because I was kinda getting over the news that I wasn’t going to be able to have a child on my own, I wasn’t really thinking about fostering or adopting,” she said. However, after daily visits to Gisele, the baby soon won her over and changed her mind.

“I knew it was meant to be. She needed me as much as I needed her,” she said. Smith eventually decided to adopt Gisele, who is now a bubbly two-year-old and is the sunshine of her mom’s life.

Watch the two of them interact in the video, which was shared by Inside Edition, and has become viral on the internet.
