Elderly Woman Bravely Jumps in Frozen River to Save Trapped Husky

Galina Voskovykh, 65, was walking with her friends near the water in Rossosh, Voronezh Oblast, western Russia, when she heard the animal scream for help. Ms Voskovykh, dressed only in her underwear, is seen helping the husky back to the riverbank in footage that has gone viral on social media. She must have had ice in her veins to stay calm in such a terrifying situation, breaking the surface with her body so that the trapped dog could swim to safety.

Galina heard a howl, and she realized it was a poor little dog trying desperately to avoid drowning in the frozen river. Without pausing to think, the lady stripped off her clothes and jumped into the water, much to the surprise of his friends. Everyone was afraid that he had put his life in danger, but the heroic act ended with the happy ending that everyone had hoped for.

After Ms Voskovykh smashed the thick ice that had trapped him in the water, the exhausted animal swam to the snowy shore. “There was a husky stuck in the water near the shore, unable to get through the ice to [return to] land, so I undressed and jumped into the water,” she explained.

Ms Voskovykh went for a jog with her dog after getting out of the freezing water to warm up and avoid hypothermia. The husky was said to have followed a man who was believed to be his owner away a short time later.

Ms Voskovykh used to swim in the winter and was used to the cold, but she stopped during the Covid pandemic. Ms Voskovykh is said to have escaped with only minor cuts and bruises, but she claims she has no regrets about her actions. “No, I don’t consider myself a hero. I think anyone would do the same,” she said. Spoken like a true hero.

The heroism of the babushka (grandmother in Russian) was met with praises on social media saying that what she did was incredible. Galina had been an expert swimmer all her life which was why she was able to go to the struggling dog to help it.

Our kindness should also be appropriated to all forms of living beings. Whether it be our neighbor, enemy, or even one such as a dog. We are called to care for all the things that God has put in our lives. Surely, there is a valid excuse to not jump in freezing water, but if you are able, you should do something about a problem especially if you have the capacity to make a change.

Galina also exemplified bravery. This is a trait that all Christians should possess. There are many things that can faze anyone, but we must remember that God is on our side and will never leave us nor forsake us. So in times when trials and challenges become difficult, we can call on God in prayer and He will answer us according to His will. Let us continue to trust and obey God.
