Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa Says ‘God Has A Plan’ After Season-Ending Hip Injury

No adversity can weaken Alabama Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s faith in God. Not even a hip injury that could very well spell the end of his football career.

The 21-year-old junior is expected to be among the top 10 choices for the 2020 NFL Draft. But his career is put on hold while he heals and recovers after going through hip surgery.

Tagovailoa suffered a dislocated hip when two Mississippi State defenders tackled him in the last three minutes before the end of the second quarter. He was carried off the field and eventually airlifted to Birmingham for scans. He also suffered a broken nose and a concussion.

Tagovailoa underwent successful surgery on Monday in Houston and is expected to make a full recovery. He will start rehab in the next several days in Tuscaloosa.

ESPN reports revealed that he will be on “a partial weight-bearing recovery plan for six weeks and will be rehabbing daily in Tuscaloosa.” He can resume with any athletic activities in three months and should be able to start playing football again by the spring.

Despite the uncertainty of his career, Tagovailoa thanked his fans for their prayers and support. He also remained positive and left everything to God.

He also stayed optimistic and cheerful, according to head coach Nick Saban, who shared that he “has a great spirit.”

“I called him Saturday night to cheer him up, and he cheers me up. I called him Sunday night to cheer him up, and he cheers me up…I can think back to four or five players that I actually truly could say that I really love those guys as people, [and for] the way they did things, their contributions and how they affected other people. Tua would be one of those four or five guys,” Saban said.

Likewise, Tagovailoa’s family is steadfast in their faith in God that He will continue to uplift his spirit and guide him on his path. His family thanked the overwhelming prayers, love, and support, and shared that they “have total faith in God’s plan for Tua,” and they know that “his plan is never wrong.”

“God’s grace, mercy, love and faithfulness in our lives has never been more evident, despite this setback,” they wrote in a statement on Tuesday.

As for Tagovailoa himself, he has always been vocal about his faith in God. Aside from the symbol of the cross that he puts on his face in every game, he told CBN News that his foundation is his faith and his family and that his faith is what keeps him motivated. He even dedicated his winning at the national champion two seasons past to God. He thanked God for what He has done to his family and to his life.
