When Patrick Hughes was born, his family was devastated to learn that he had been born without eyes and with malformed limbs. His father, who had anticipated doing all of the typical things a father and son do together, was convinced that nothing would be typical.
Patrick’s legs and arms were also unable to straighten due to a rare condition of congenital hip dysplasia and bilateral anophthalmia with pterygium syndrome . The boy was given artificial eyes and a wheelchair to help him get around.
Patrick Henry Hughes has a number of physical limitations, but he is exceptionally gifted in other areas. Patrick Henry Hughes showed an early interest in and natural talent for playing the piano at the age of one.
Patrick would sit at the piano with the young toddler and play a song. He was able to recreate the song without even looking at the keys. Patrick’s talent for musical performance was obvious from a young age.
The young boy’s passion for music grew as he grew older. Throughout high school, he played the piano and trumpet, and he was even able to join the University of Louisville marching band, which was an incredible achievement for a boy with his disabilities.
Patrick was born with a natural talent for the piano. The future musician was able to listen to his mother play a key and then find and tap on the same note before he was even a year old.
“You could go up and hit a note — no matter where it was on the piano,” his mother said, “and he would find that exact note within one or two tries.”
Patrick’s father was devastated when he learned that his son was born with so many congenital conditions, but his son’s newfound talent showed that his disability did not mean a life of setbacks.
Patrick’s father said, “I was just ecstatic that, you know, we’re not going to play baseball, but we’re going to play music together. And that was a lot of fun; now let’s see how far we can take this.”
Patrick was performing blues numbers in front of audiences by high school. Following that, he applied to colleges. Patrick Henry Hughes was offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity after being accepted to the University of Louisville. The director of the university’s marching band approached him and asked if he would like to join the group.
There were some challenges with this proposal because as a member of a marching band, Patrick had to march. But his father came up with a solution: he would be at his son’s feet. So during performance, Patrick would play his instrument and his dad would be with him to push him along.
