A poignant photograph capturing the heartfelt connection between a devoted elderly Chinese couple, married for nearly seven decades, while they held hands in the intensive care unit, has become an internet sensation, resonating with millions of people worldwide.
The moving image was taken and shared by Wang Yanfang, the head nurse at the intensive care unit of Yinzhou Hospital in Zhejiang Province, Eastern China, as reported by New China.
The 92-year-old husband, Feng Ming, initially found himself in the intensive care unit due to heart failure. Tragically, his condition took a turn for the worse as multiple organs began to fail, compounded by a lung infection. Feng became unable to speak and relied on life support to stay alive. Recognizing the gravity of his condition, his family decided to cease therapy and bring him home. However, before leaving the hospital, he had one last wish—to see his wife of 66 years.
Meanwhile, Zhang Ping, Feng’s 95-year-old wife, was admitted to the same hospital but was located on a different floor, receiving treatment for a fractured femur.
Wang, the compassionate head nurse, understood the urgency of the situation. The ICU visiting hours were scheduled from 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm, which was too late given Feng’s deteriorating condition. He arranged a special transfer for the elderly couple, ensuring they could reunite, possibly for the last time.
Following Wang’s request, Zhang was moved on a stretcher from the 14th floor to the ICU on the third floor, where the two were finally reunited. Overwhelmed with emotion, Zhang held her husband’s hand and spoke to him in their local dialect, reassuring him, “Don’t worry about me. Rest assured that I can take good care of myself.” Feng, teary-eyed, passed away in the comfort of his home several hours later.
