Atheist Group Wants Bible Verse Mural Scrubbed from City Hall But Ohio Mayor Isn’t Backing Down

Findlay, Ohio – An anti-religion group sent a cease-and-desist letter to the municipal office about a mural painted in the municipal building.

They claim that the mural is unconstitutional because what’s written on it conveys government support of religion.

The mural is a painting of an eagle and on top is written the words “Under His wings shall you find refuge,” and a Scripture reference, “Psalms 91.” It was painted by Cathy Schock, a professional artist from Hancock County. She made the mural which is titled “Under His Wings,” based on the verse in Psalm 91:4, ““He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.”

Upon completion, Schock said that she hopes that the project will inspire a spirit of unity and collaboration between various communities. But the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) said that the city needs to remove it because the location is government property and does not belong to anyone.

The mayor, Lydia Mihalik, said in response, “Our community is strong because we have belief. We believe in a power greater than ourselves that promises a brighter day is ahead despite our individual struggles. In our community we have many people who practice many faiths and believe many things. I celebrate those elements of my community and refuse to apologize for it.”

But the atheist group said that with the addition of the Bible verse, it is visible proof of endorsement of a religion.

Mayor Mihalik responded in the most casual manner saying, “It’s a distortion of the First Amendment. Their belief that we are endorsing a religion here with this particular painting is wrong. We have a lot of people who are supporting what we have here in this community. So, we’re going to continue to have it up in this building until we’re told something different.”

The mayor adds that there are many people in FIndlay that look to a “higher power” as their source of hope from their struggles. Many things can make someone easily crumble. There’s the pandemic, crime, broken relationships, and many more.

Having God in their lives makes them stronger and even in the midst of hardships.

God is not a magical genie you just go to if you have wishes. He is alive and active and wants a genuine relationship with everyone. His love was made visible on the cross through Jesus CHrist. Anyone who draws near to Him, He will not reject.

Even if atheists do not believe in God, He still welcomes them and desires for them to change their ways. This act of defiance has been seen throughout the world and in history. What these people are doing is not news but rather just a repetition of what has happened.

Stand firm in your faith despite opposition because when you stand on the truth, you can stand without fear and will be victorious in the end.“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
