Woman Rents Home for 20 Years Not Expecting Generous Landlord to Leave House to Her

A cancer survivor named Sayner received an unexpected surprise from her late landlord John Perrett.

Sayner had undergone an operation for bowel cancer in December 2021 and was worried about her future, especially her financial stability in her 80s. To her surprise, Perrett included her name in his last will and testament, giving her the apartment she had lived in for years as a permanent home.

Perrett was a pharmacist who had been involved in various community activities and lived in a nursing home in his last days after suffering from a fall several times. He underwent a kidney transplant 30 years before his death and decided to donate $18.6 million to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Sayner, who paid her rent on time and treated the apartment as her own, believes Perrett saw her as a good tenant and decided to give her the unit as a reward for her loyalty.

Sayner had worked at Costa for almost 25 years before she retired at the age of 74 and had to stop because of her health condition. With her new permanent home and pension, Sayner is grateful for the opportunity to not have to worry about her future.

Sayner remembers checking up on Perrett during his stay in the nursing home and calling in at least once a week on her way home from work. She wasn’t able to visit him during the last three months of his life but was among the 10 people allowed to attend his ceremony after his death.

Perrett also gave a unit to another tenant and money to his trusted handyman. Sayner’s reward for her loyalty and devotion to Perrett is a testament to how a simple act of kindness can make a huge impact on someone’s life. When asked about her new situation, Sayner simply says, “What more could you want?”
