The Paris Summer Olympics have stirred controversy among many Christians, particularly regarding the opening ceremony. Critics on social media labeled it one of the worst in history, citing the choice of artists and the presentation of athletes as major points of contention, according to Wide Open Country.
Amidst the debates, there were still moments where faith and inspiration took center stage, most notably through the actions of Brazilian skateboarder Rayssa Leal. The sixteen-year-old used her moment of triumph to honor Jesus, showcasing her faith on a global stage. After winning the bronze medal, Leal quoted John 14:6 in sign language: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me,’” as reported by The Christian Post.
In a post-victory interview, Leal reflected on her journey, saying, “When I was very young, I dreamed of becoming a skateboard athlete. And here I am, with a second Olympic medal from the Games. Once again, thank God I won a medal. I’m very happy to be here.” She expressed her gratitude and joy, emphasizing the overwhelming support from Brazilian fans that made her feel at home.
Michelle Arruda, a Brazilian fan, told CNN, “It was like a gold medal because … she had to make it. It was a lot of emotion and felt like the Olympic spirit – you have to be here to understand what it is.” Arruda described the intense emotions and prayers shared by the supporters, believing deeply in Leal’s success.
Leal’s journey in the Olympics began with her historic win at the Tokyo Olympics, where she became the youngest Olympic medalist in Brazil, securing a silver medal. Her continued success and faith-driven message at the Paris Olympics have further solidified her as an inspirational figure in both the sports and faith communities.
