The country trio Chapel Hart from Mississippi made an impressive debut on America’s Got Talent (AGT) with their original song “You Can Have Him, Jolene,” which caught the judges’ attention.
Despite all four judges having already used their golden buzzers, they unanimously decided to award the group with a group golden buzzer, which has only happened once before on the show.
The group, consisting of sisters Danica and Devynn Hart and their cousin, Trea Swindle, has been singing together since they were children and drew inspiration from Dolly Parton’s 1973 classic “Jolene” for their performance.
It has been challenging for the group to break into Nashville as black country singers. Danica shared with the judges that “it’s been kind of hard when I think country music doesn’t always look like us.”
Despite this, the judges were impressed with the trio’s talent and energy. Howie Mandel praised their originality, saying, “that is your win, because you are going to be the original.” Simon Cowell also expressed his admiration, saying, “Trust me, I needed you today. I mean, that was fantastic.”
